Introduction to Discover Dental
Discover Dental is a Pediatric Dental practice in West Nyack, NY. The name “Discover” was used to express the excitement of discovery and adventure of childhood. We want the dental experience to be more than fillings and cleanings. It should be an enjoyable and refreshing experience. We advocate that education and knowledge are just as important in health care than any treatment or medicine.
We want children and families to:
- Discover the importance of prevention
- Discover the importance of diet
- Discover the importance of oral hygiene
- Discover that the mouth is more than just teeth
- Discover a new way to experience and enjoy the dentist
- Discover that your overall health is directly impacted by your oral health
- Discover that you are in charge of your health
- Discover that there are good people that want the best for you and your family
- Discover that health is wealth
Philosophy, Mission, and Vision
We get it. Most people don’t like the dentist. Usually that comes from negative childhood experiences. Some of the blame is certainly dentists who don’t understand the needs of children, both dentally and (more importantly) psychologically. There certainly are some great general dentists that have a naturally understanding of this, but all pediatric dentists have more training in what this entails.
Going to the dentist should be fun! We know, you are probably rolling your eyes. Well, it can be! We all have to clean our teeth, and we all feel a little bit better right after, right? When you come to the dentist, you have someone doing it for you. It should be like a gingival massage or something! Hmmm, still not convinced? We get it; its weird and uncomfortable when someone you see only twice a year is in your personal space. At our practice we special in making your children feel comfortable from the moment they walk in to moment you leave.
For those that are especially nervous, we have options for laughing gas (aka nitrous oxide), and general anesthesia. We will talk about those in other blog posts, but are very safe options for nearly every child.
While dentists are to blame for the anxiety we feel at the dentist, we are not the only source of it. Our society and culture demonize the dentist, and make visits nightmares. Some of you parents are also to blame! Yes, we are calling you out! We have observed first hand parents threatening children to behave or they will take them to the dentist, or have their teeth pulled. This makes the perception of the dentist worse! ESPECIALLY on highly impressionable children. So please don’t. Instead, let them know that going to the dentist is normal, and can be fun. There will be toys, prizes, stickers, and other goodies when they visit.
Oh boy, thats a lot. We have more to talk about our philosophy of care and dentistry, but we’ll save that for next time.
